Never keep your head down

There was a little boy, just like me, just like you. He was crossing a crowded street. The amount of people was so unbearable, so hard to deal with, but the little boy needed to cross it. However, when he got there he realised his bag wasn't with him anymore.
The only thing in his mind was his mother yelling at him. His school supplies were really expensive for them. The boy started crying on the avenue, didn't know what to do. At this moment an old man lowered to get closer and asked what happened. The kid told him, inconsolable. The man sad "never keep your head down, my kid" and gave his back to the boy and walked away.
The child didn't understand the man, why did he do that? What did he mean? He looked high and  above a small windbreak was his bag with some extra money.
